Sacred Sex Glossary    Posted: June 29, 2004 Reply with quote

Red This Glossary gives definitions of sacred sex terms you'll find on this website.

Some words, like 'lingam' & 'yoni', are from sacred sex cultures around the world -- these foreign terms are explained. Others are English terms that have specific meaning in sacred sex. Still others are descriptions of techniques or practices you'll find specifically on this site; these are indicated as 'SSS terms' (Society for Sacred Sexuality).

If you come across a term you're not familiar with on the site, and you don't find it here in the glossary, reply to this post and we'll add it. (First check the Topic Index to see if the term is explained in one of the lessons.)

Note the Glossary is under construction; more definitions will be added as forum topics introduce them.

A
Active Orgasm Inducer - SSS term for techniques or practices that induce orgasm by directly & deeply relaxing you when sexually aroused. These methods trigger your body's natural orgasmic response to kick in much earlier than in common sex.

Active orgasm inducers are stronger than passive ones; for a listing and more explanation of each, including how to use them, see Sacred Sex Lesson 7 (also Reference Charts).

Afterglow - The upliftment & rejuvenating energy you feel after sex.

In common sex, only some women typically enjoy this. In sacred sex, afterglow is not only stronger, clearer, and longer lasting, but also both genders feel it. This results from retaining your sexual energy at the time of orgasm -- that energy uplifts & feeds you after. Afterglow intensity grows over time with your sacred sex practice, becoming permanent in Sexual Enlightenment.

Cosmic Orgasm - SSS term describing the experience of Sexual Enlightenment. Cosmic Orgasm combines the subjective experience of permanent orgasmic-like ecstasy with support from the universe for fulfillment of all desires. For a complete discussion, see the Sexual Enlightenment Forum.

Deva - Sanskrit name (literally 'shining') for God (or more commonly, the lesser gods, or laws of nature), from the Tantric tradition of India. It may also refer to any man on a spiritual path.

Devi - Sanskrit name for the Goddess, from the Tantric tradition of India. It may also refer to any woman on a spiritual path.

E-F
Extended Orgasm - SSS term for repeated, sustained, or continuous orgasm, achieved by rising to sexual climax in a balanced way, so that your body stays there (see Sacred Sex Lesson 4). Subjectively, you experience orgasmic ecstasy (prolonged orgasmic bliss) and/or Sacred Union. Through extended orgasm, your body habituates to holding the experience of ecstasy for longer & longer periods. This directly leads (in time) to Sexual Enlightenment, where ecstasy is a continuous reality.

Female Essence - See 'Shakti'; there is also a description of female essence in the Origin of Sacred Sex Forum.

G
G-spot - see Sacred Spot.

Gap - SSS term for the experience just before orgasm, where one is highly aroused but not yet at sexual climax. It may also be described as being on the edge of orgasm, but is before 'the point of no return'. The Gap varies among people, but is typically 70-90% of the way to orgasm. (Within this range is a point of maximum pleasure for each person, called your 'sweet spot'.)

In sacred sex, you arouse yourself to this level, and then induce sacred orgasm, using methods taught in Sacred Sex Lessons 1-7. Because you climax in sacred orgasm without losing your sexual energy, you can maintain this heightened arousal for long periods. This is called 'Surfing the Gap'. From the Gap, you slip in & out of sacred orgasm repeatedly.

Because the Gap is a transition zone between two very different realities - everyday experience and orgasmic ecstasy - you become fluid, able to easily flow back & forth between the two. This is a basic step toward enjoying orgasmic ecstasy in the midst of everyday life, a state called Sexual Enlightenment.

Goddess Spot - see Sacred Spot.

L
Lingam (also spelled 'lingham') - Sanskrit name for the male sex organ, from the Tantric tradition of India; literally translated as sign or attribute, it is the mark of a man, the sign of his male existence.

In purely spiritual terms, lingam represents everyone's male essence, known in Tantra as 'Shiva'. Lingam also means 'subtle'; male essence - Shiva - is the subtle spirit in everyone. Tantra honors this male essence symbolically by venerating the lingam.

In India, the lingam is commonly represented by a phallic-shaped stone resting on a symbolic yoni, the sign of female essence. The two together depict wholeness of life: male & female essence together.

In the west, lingam is more loosely and commonly translated as 'wand of light', referring to its capacity to enlighten through sacred sex. While this function is accurate, the definition is metaphorical, not literal.

For a more complete discussion of this term, see the Male Anatomy Forum.

Love Muscles - SSS term for the pubococcygeus (PC) muscle; used in sexercise to contract the sacred spot and surrounding area, effectively 'pumping up' your sexual energy, and inducing orgasm.

To learn how to use your love muscles in sacred sex, see Sacred Sex Lesson 4.

The term may have similar meaning in other sacred sex teachings.

Male Essence - See 'Shiva'; there is also a description of male essence in the Origin of Sacred Sex Forum.

N
Namaste - Sanskrit term used as an honorary greeting in India & elsewhere. It roughly translates as: "the divine in me honors the divine in you," and is typically accompanied by a gesture of the hands brought together as in prayer, at the chest.

In the context of sacred sex, Namaste is an acknowledgement by each partner of the divinity in themselves and the other, an experience made real through practice. Together with the hand gesture, which represents a joining of the right- & left-hand 'sides' of life (male & female, respectively), it symbolizes sacred union, in which male & female join together in spiritual wholeness.

O
Orgasm Inducer - SSS term for techniques or practices that induce sacred orgasm. (See also Active/Passive Orgasm Inducers.)

Orgasmic Balance - SSS term for the body's natural state of balanced energy during orgasm.

In common sex, this balance is momentary: stimulation arouses your sexual energy, then your body releases that built up energy when it climaxes, restoring the balance. However, the explosive release of conventional orgasm also depletes your sexual energy, preventing you from building it to orgasm again.

Sacred sex arouses your energy in a balanced way, so that you remain balanced even in orgasm. This allows you to enjoy extended orgasm and orgasmic ecstasy.

Orgasmic Ecstasy - SSS term for the subjective experience you enjoy during sacred orgasm and Sacred Union. Regular sacred sex practice sustains this experience over time. Eventually, ecstasy becomes permanent in Sexual Enlightenment.

Familiar terms that bear some resemblance to orgasmic ecstasy are spiritual 'rapture', and the 'zone' that some athletes slip into; but orgasmic ecstasy is a more clearly defined, heightened state of awareness.

Orgasmic Wave Balance - SSS term for the overall energy balance during sacred sex. The term is used in connection with the wave & surfing analogies that help to understand sacred sex. It combines orgasmic balance & wave balance (see individual definitions for those terms). Sacred sex brings about orgasmic-wave balance naturally & automatically - no effort or understanding needed - simply by following the practice.

For a full discussion of orgasmic-wave balance, see Sacred Sex Lesson 2.

P-Q
PC Muscle - the pubococcygeus muscle; used in sexercise to contract the sacred spot and surrounding area, effectively 'pumping up' your sex energy and inducing orgasm.

To learn how to use your PC muscle in sacred sex, see Sacred Sex Lesson 4.

Passive Orgasm Inducer - SSS term for techniques or practices that let your body orgasm earlier, as it's designed to. They work on the premise that orgasm is an aroused letting go, and that over-stimulation artificially delays your letting go. Some passive inducers use secondary sex play to divert attention from direct stimulation; others heighten your awareness of pleasure, relaxing you into orgasm. Passive orgasm inducers are subtler than active ones; for a listing and more explanation of each, including how to use them, see Sacred Sex Lesson 7 (also Reference Charts).

Prana - Sanskrit term for the life-force or vital air. At its subtlest level, prana is the vibratory nature of Universal Being, which brings creation into existence. (Physics calls it the fluctuating nature of the vacuum state, which brings matter into existence.) On an individual level, it is your pulsating Inner Self, from which your individuality springs. At the gross level, it is simply breath.

Because of its range of existence, from the everyday breath to the subtlest fluctuation of your being, prana is a powerful tool for leading you from the everyday gross to the more refined, pleasureful levels of sensation, and ultimately to the ecstasy of your innermost Self.

Sacred sex shows you how to let your breath flow naturally during sex (see Sacred Sex Lesson 6), so that your sexual energy flows with it, following increasing pleasure until it finds innermost bliss. This is sacred orgasm.

S
Sacred Orgasm - SSS term describing sacred sex orgasm. At its most basic level, it refers to orgasm without loss of sexual energy.

In common sex, orgasm is an explosive release of energy. For men, it is a physical ejaculation that leaves him drained; for women, it is a more subtle depletion that leaves her feeling 'done'. This loss of your sexual energy prevents you from building it to orgasm again.

Sacred orgasm is a more balanced release that occurs internally, preserving your sexual energy, and allowing you to arouse it to climax again. Because you retain your sexual energy with each orgasm, climax grows deeper & fuller each time. This leads to extended orgasm and orgasmic ecstasy.

Your energy buildup ultimately leads to a distinct inner experience called Sacred Union. Sacred Union is peak human awareness -- the union of your true male & female essence. In sacred sex, your male essence is silent Inner Being; your female essence is Universal Energy. When you experience the full value of these two together, it is Sacred Union.

Sacred orgasm and Sacred Union are explained more fully in the Sacred Union Forum.

This term may have similar meaning in other sacred sex teachings.

Sacred Sex - Sexual practice that results in the experience of sacred orgasm, and grows into Sexual Enlightenment. Sacred sex typically involves specific techniques to achieve this experience, including sexercise, massage, breathing, and others.

This term has similar or identical meaning in other sacred sex teachings. The Society for Sacred Sexuality defines sacred sex by the experience it creates (rather than the techniques it uses) to point out that:

1) there is more than one way to practice sacred sex, and achieve the experience;

but that:

2) practices promoted as sacred sex that don't lead to or toward this experience don't develop your full sexual potential, and are not genuine sacred sex.

To learn sacred sex as taught by the Society for Sacred Sexuality, see our Sacred Sex Lessons.

Sacred Sex Surfing - SSS term for sex practice that flows with your energy like a wave. Sacred sex surfing lets you enjoy sex in a heightened state of arousal for long periods of time, repeatedly slipping into orgasm. This extended orgasmic ecstasy leads to deep Sacred Union, and ultimately to Sexual Enlightenment.

Sacred sex surfing describes the general method of sacred sex taught by the Society for Sacred Sexuality.

The term may have similar meaning in other sacred sex teachings, but is typically less clearly defined and explained. The Society for Sacred Sexuality method induces sacred sex surfing automatically. You go with this wave flow naturally, without manipulation or restraint.

For a complete understanding of sacred sex surfing, including how to do it, see our Sacred Sex Lesson Forum, specifically Lesson 2.

Sacred Sexercise - SSS term for squeezing & releasing the pubococcygeus (PC) muscle to arouse your sexual energy to orgasm in a balanced way. When this muscle is toned, sexercise leads to sacred orgasm.

To learn Sacred Sexercise, see Sacred Sex Lesson 4.

This term may have similar meaning in other sacred sex teachings.

Sacred Space - The space in which sacred sex is practiced. This may have several meanings:

First, sacred space may refer to the room or other indoor or outdoor space where sacred sex is practiced. This space is typically, but not necessarily, arranged and/or otherwise adorned to create an uplifting atmosphere for sacred sex practice.

Second, sacred space is commonly used as an alternative term for yoni (her sex organ), which is the literal 'space' in which sacred sex is practiced.

In the highest sense, sacred space refers to your consciousness, the inner space in which you experience sacred orgasm and Sexual Enlightenment.

For a complete discussion of this term, see the Sacred Space Forum.

Sacred Spot - A unisex name for the male & female glands that reflexively contract during orgasm, secreting sexual fluids. They are also intimately involved in arousing sexual energy.

The most common reference is to the female G-spot -- the (typically) raised & rougher tissue area 1-3 inches in on the upper wall of her yoni. During vaginal orgasm (and sometimes clitoral ones as well), her sacred spot repeatedly contracts, pumping up the sexual energy & resulting in the experience of orgasm. Sacred sex uses sexercise to voluntarily squeeze the sacred spot, and thereby induce orgasm (see Sacred Sex Lesson 4).

When her sacred spot contracts, it secretes a clear fluid that is similar to male prostatic fluid. Before sacred sex, this secretion is noticed simply as juiciness in the yoni. However, with frequent sexercise during sacred sex, it can take the form of ejaculation -- an actual stream, not unlike urination. This fluid is prized for its health value in sacred sex (see Amrita).

His sacred spot is the prostate, just in front of his rectal wall, 1-3 inches in. It too repeatedly contracts during orgasm, and is also voluntarily squeezed to induce it in sacred sex.

In conventional orgasm, the prostate secretes clear prostatic fluid, which mixes with the whitish sperm to make semen (ejaculate). In sacred sex though, he orgasms without ejaculating (see Lesson 4). His prostate still secretes fluid though; it is simply absorbed internally. Like the female secretion, this also has a beneficial health effect.

The sacred spot is also called 'goddess spot', especially in women.

Sacred Spot Massage

Sacred Thrust - SSS term for thrusting in such a way that the urge is satisfied without over-stimulating the body. It involves both partners thrusting in sync (not in opposition, as in conventional thrusting), to reduce friction between the genitals. Sacred Thrust is described in more detail in Sacred Sex Lesson 3.

Sacred Union - SSS term for the peak inner experience during sacred sex: the union of your true male & female essence. In sacred sex, your male essence is silent Inner Being; your female essence is Universal Energy, or active awareness. Experience of the full value of these two together is Sacred Union. During sacred sex, partners may experience Sacred Union inwardly on their own, or both may attain the universal inner state simultaneously.

Sacred Union then leads to an even fuller state. Through repeated experience of it, the body gets habituated to holding maintaining Sacred Union even after sex, until this peak human awareness becomes permanent. This is called Sexual Enlightenment.

For a complete description of this sexual consummation, see the Sacred Union Forum.

This term may have similar meaning in other sacred sex teachings.

Sacred Union is also a general sacred sex term for the coming together of man & woman in sacred sex.

Science of Sacred Sex - SSS term for the body of knowledge relating to the teaching & practice of sacred sex.

As a complete science, it has both subjective (experiential) and objective (measurable & verifiable) components. In addition, sacred sex science offers theoretical understanding.

The subjective aspect comprises two basic sacred sex experiences: sacred orgasm and Sexual Enlightenment. For a full explanation of each, see the Sacred Union and Sexual Enlightenment Forums. Sexual Enlightenment also offers objective validation from an experiential perspective.

The objective aspect consists of research on spiritual states in general, and on sacred sex as a spiritual practice. For a full explanation of this, see Science of Sacred Sex.

The theoretical aspect consists of a clear understanding of sacred sex principles & applications. It also includes reference to modern scientific theory that may explain the experiences and impact of sacred sex. For an overview plus links to specific lessons on the site explaining these ideas, see Science of Sacred Sex.

To learn sacred sex and verify this science through personal experience, visit the Sacred Sex Lesson Forum.

Sexercise - see Sacred Sexercise.

Sexual Enlightenment - SSS term for the spiritual awakening gained through sacred sex. It is characterized by continuous experience of Sacred Union, even outside sex.

Sacred sex cultivates Sexual Enlightenment easily & naturally, in clearly defined steps:

1) Experience of sacred orgasm, which allows you to enjoy increasingly fuller & deeper orgasm. This is due to retaining your sexual energy during climax, so you can continue building it up for deeper ones. This energy retention leads to the second step:

2) Experience of extended sacred orgasm; because your aroused sex energy remains in your body - at its peak - you orgasm longer. You enjoy a rapturous state called orgasmic ecstasy. Extended orgasm in turn leads to the third step:

3) Experience of Sacred Union (spiritual awareness) during sacred sex. This grows into the fourth step:

4) Experience of Sacred Union even after sex. As your body habituates to holding Sacred Union for longer times, it begins to linger even after sex (see 'Afterglow'). This experience reaches its peak in the final step of sexual evolution:

5) 24-hour continuous Sacred Union, throughout all activity and sleep.

Sexual enlightenment is equivalent to general spiritual enlightenment or self-realization. It is your birthright and full sexual potential.

For a full explanation & description of this state - including its practical application to daily life - see the Sexual Enlightenment Forum.

This term may have similar meaning in other sacred sex teachings, but it is typically less clearly defined.

Shakti - Sanskrit term for the feminine essence of life, from the Tantric tradition of India. Everyone, regardless of gender, has this shakti.

Your female essence is your nature -- what you do. This pertains to all levels of life, from gross to subtle. On an everyday level, you can think of it as your personal nature (personality, tendencies, likes, dislikes, etc.). Deeper than this is the life-energy that animates your nature -- this is your highest personal shakti. Ultimately, your individual life-energy springs from Universal Energy: your personal nature arises out of the broader nature of life. Therefore, your true nature, or female essence, is Universal Energy channeled through your individual personality.

(For more description of female essence, see the Origin of Sacred Sex Forum.)

Universal Shakti is the energy that gives rise to and governs creation. In the west, this energy and its offshoots are what we call the laws of nature. The laws of nature bring creation into existence, and also govern its functioning.

Tantra personifies Shakti as the 'Goddess'. As such, it is She who gives birth to creation, and is its mother. A common expression for Her in the west is 'Mother Nature'.

In Tantra (and commonly in all sacred sex), Shakti joins with Shiva - your male essence - to create sacred union. This is life in its wholeness: male & female essence together. You experience your true male & female essence in sacred orgasm. When you are fully conscious of your male/female essence all the time, you have gained Sexual Enlightenment.

Because shakti is feminine essence, it has gender-related meanings too. On the physical level, shakti refers to a woman who joins with a man (shiva) in sacred sex practice. On an even more mundane level, shakti may refer to any woman.

Shiva - Sanskrit term for the male essence of life, from the Tantric tradition of India. Everyone, regardless of gender, has this shiva.

Your male essence is your identity -- who you are. It has meaning on all levels of life, from gross to subtle: your body, mind, ego, and ultimately, your Inner Self. Your Inner Self is Universal Being, or Consciousness; this is your true identity. Your Inner Self is beyond individual limitations; it is pure, infinite bliss, or ecstasy. Therefore, your true identity, or male essence, is Universal Being embodied as an individual -- you.

(For more description of male essence, see the Origin of Sacred Sex Forum.)

In sacred sex, you directly experience your blissful Inner Self in the ecstasy of sacred orgasm. There, you also experience your true female essence, known in Tantra as 'Shakti'. Briefly, Shakti is the Universal Energy of your Inner Self. In sacred orgasm, you also feel this universal energy surge through you.

Through extended orgasm, your body habituates to holding the experience of sacred orgasm for longer periods, even outside of sex. In time, it becomes a continuous permanent reality: Sexual Enlightenment.

Because shiva is male essence, it has gender-related meanings too. On the physical level, shiva refers to a man who joins with a woman (shakti) in sacred sex practice.

Surfing - see Sacred Sex Surfing

Surfing the Gap - SSS term for sustaining highly aroused sexual energy in order to repeatedly induce sacred orgasm.

This heightened level of arousal - typically 70-90% of the way to orgasm - is called the 'Gap'. The term 'Surfing the Gap' comes from the surfing analogy that helps to understand sacred sex.

Surfing the Gap is a key practice of sacred sex. See the Secret of Sacred Sex for a full discussion of this.

Sweet Spot on your Sexual Wave - SSS term for the heightened level of arousal that brings satisfying pleasure without inducing conventional orgasm. The term is used in connection with the wave & surfing analogies that help to understand sacred sex.

In sacred sex, you arouse yourself to this level, and then induce sacred orgasm, using methods taught in Sacred Sex Lessons 1-7. Because you climax in sacred orgasm without losing your sexual energy, you can maintain this heightened arousal for long periods. This is called balancing on your sexual wave (see Wave Balance). From this sweet spot, you slip in & out of sacred orgasm repeatedly.

Repeated sacred orgasm gives rise to orgasmic ecstasy, which is much more deeply satisfying than conventional orgasm.

The sweet spot is different for different people; experiment to find yours. It should be high enough, and bring enough pleasure to induce sacred orgasm, but not so high as to bring on common orgasm, which throws you off your sexual wave (see Wipeout).

Your sweet spot is in the 'Gap' -- that highly aroused state between ordinary experience and orgasmic ecstasy. For more on the sweet spot of your sexual wave, see Sacred Sex Lesson 2.

U-V-W
Wave Balance - SSS term for that 'sweet spot' on your sexual wave that brings the most pleasure. The term is used in connection with the wave & surfing analogies that help to understand sacred sex.

In conventional sex, this is typically the highest point you can go (the 'crest' of the wave) -- this orgasmic release balances the frantic stimulation of common sex. But it also brings wipeout -- you're thrown off your wave by the power at its peak: sex ends.

In sacred sex, you find wave balance on the face of the wave, below the crest. Here, the immediate thrill may be slightly less, but you can surf the wave for longer periods, leading to extended orgasm, and ecstasy that surpasses the three-second thrill of common sex.

The sweet spot is different for different people; experiment to find yours. It should be high enough, and bring enough pleasure to induce sacred orgasm, but not so high as to bring on common orgasm, which throws you off your sexual wave (see Wipeout).

For a full explanation of Wave Balance, see Sacred Sex Lesson 2.

Wave Orgasm - SSS alternative term for sacred orgasm, emphasizing the wave-like quality of the experience. It also describes the style of sex that leads to it - sacred sex - in contrast to common sex, which creates 'friction orgasm'. For a more complete description, see Sacred Sex Lesson 2.

Way of the Goddess
White Tantra

Wipeout - SSS term for losing your sexual energy during orgasm, so that you can't arouse it to climax again (also called 'going over the top' or 'getting thrown off your sexual wave'). The term is mainly used in connection with the wave & surfing analogies that help to understand sacred sex.

For men, wipeout is typically associated with ejaculation at the time of orgasm. This releases his aroused sexual energy, leaving him drained & depleted, unable to continue sex. Sacred sex teaches him to climax without ejaculating, so that he can continue riding the wave of his aroused sexual energy.

For women, wipeout is less clearly defined, but is typically associated with clitoral orgasm, as opposed to vaginal or G-spot ones. Clitoral orgasm often leaves her feeling 'done', while vaginal ones continue building up in waves of multiple orgasm. This is due to subtle energy loss with clitoral orgasm. Sacred sex gives her deep G-spot orgasms that build her sexual energy, rather than deplete it, so that she can continue riding her aroused sexual wave.

For more on Wipeout, and what to do about it, see Sacred Sex Lessons 4 & 7.

X-Y-Z
Yab-Yum - Tibetan term for the Love Seat sacred sex position taught in Lesson 3. Translated, it means 'Father-Mother', giving expression to the male/female union of sacred sex.

Yang (see also Yin)
Yin (see also Yang)

Yoni - Sanskrit name for the Womb of the Goddess, from the Tantric tradition of India; literally translated as source or origin, it signifies the fountainhead of creation.

In physical terms, yoni refers to the female sex organ. In the context of sacred sex practice, it is commonly translated as 'sacred space'.

Yoni represents the essence of female energy, known in Tantra as 'Shakti'. Tantra symbolically honors this female essence by honoring the physical yoni.

In India, female sexual essence is commonly represented by a yoni-shaped stone supporting a symbolic lingam, the sign of male essence. The two together depict wholeness of life: male & female in sacred union.

For a more complete discussion of this term, see the Goddess Worship Forum.
