Current status of SSS legal action    Posted: July 12, 2004 Reply with quote

Check here for the latest news about the effort to establish a legal status for certified teachers of sacred sexuality.

Note: this is a public Forum, in addition to a press information center; you may ask questions and post comments on the status of our legal action.

However, please post ideas/suggestions for legal strategy, etc., HERE.
Please also debate the legalization issue itself HERE.

=================

Current status:

Arrow October 26, 2011 - After consultation with legal professionals, the Society for Sacred Sexuality has revised its position on this issue. We no longer hold that current sex laws are a violation of constitutional rights, and do not seek to challenge them in court. However, we do still maintain that there is a legal distinction between sacred sex & common sex that merits distinct legislation. Specifically, we still hold that current sex laws, as they pertain to sacred sex, are unjustified (since sacred sex neither infringes on the rights of others nor causes social harm) and go against American ideals of freedom. We therefore encourage lawmakers to distinguish sacred sex from common sex and legislate accordingly. Our efforts in this regard are now strictly in the arenas of education and advocacy.

With regard to the Phoenix Goddess Temple case, we will seek to educate the public regarding this issue as opportunities arise, but plan no specific legal action in court.

Previous updates:

October 19, 2011 - The Society for Sacred Sexuality has revised its strategy to challenge current sex laws. Our legal defense now rests on the right to contract guaranteed by the Constitution. We are still exploring whether to apply this strategy to the Phoenix Goddess Temple case.

September 23, 2011 - The Society for Sacred Sexuality is currently examining the recent case involving the Phoenix Goddess Temple in Arizona to determine whether any, and what type, of action is warranted. We are working with other sacred sex teachers and organizations to develop a coordinated response.

September 3, 2009 - The Society for Sacred Sexuality is currently focused on projects to raise public awareness about sacred sex. This is a continuation of the policy stated on October 9, 2004 (see below), and has not substantially changed since then. The Society for Sacred Sexuality remains firmly committed to achieving legal status for teachers, and will take up the issue again as public interest in sacred sex grows.

December 5, 2005 - The Society for Sacred Sexuality is studying and monitoring current court cases involving this issue. We will use this information to strengthen our legal position and determine the best course of action for mounting a legal challenge.

October 9, 2004 - In response to positive feedback & suggestions from users, the Society for Sacred Sexuality has decided to focus current efforts on developing this website as an educational tool to promote its goals. The Society will reconsider its legal initiative at a future date, based on progress toward those goals.

August 9, 2004 - The Society for Sacred Sexuality is investigating legal strategies & options, preparing arguments, and gathering resources. A Letter to the ACLU (American Civil Liberties Union) has been sent, requesting legal assistance. An attorney with potential interest in this case has been contacted and at least one other will be contacted shortly. A press release to major news media has been sent out.
